The traditional alpine resort of La Chapelle D’Abondance is situated in the heart of the Abondance valley, just 5 minutes drive from neighbouring Chatel. This authentic old farming village feels very traditional – with many of the businesses being run by fourth or fifth generation local families.
While less developed than Chatel, La Chapelle does offer its very own ski slopes, a range of shops and bars, and an excellent choice of restaurants including the stylish L’Atelier de Jacky and Les Cornettes Hotel which has welcomed guests since 1897 and serves some of the best Savoyard specialities in the whole valley.
For skiing, there is easy access on one side of the valley to the vast Portes du Soleil ski domain with over 650km of pistes, and La Chapelle’s own pistes are a joy to ski with varying terrain– from pretty treelined runs to wide open fields and challenging off piste. On the opposite side of the valley sits the beautiful mountain range of the Mont de Grange. At the foot is a self-contained ski area – Cret Beni, which includes a great beginner area and ESF centre, as well as some fantastic steep runs further up the mountain.
La Chapelle D’Abondance is the area’s centre for cross country skiing – starting on the ‘flats’ with 35km of nordic trails linking Chatel, La Chapelle and Abondance.
The ‘flats’ are also a favourite area for walking and snow-shoeing, with easy access and multiple routes to choose from across the lower part of the Mont de Grange nature reserve. If you fancy something a bit different La Chapelle is also home to the valley’s huskies! You really feel like you’re in the mountains when you’re wrapped up on a sled being pulled by these gorgeous dogs. Alternatively, take a horse-drawn carriage through the snow taking in the beautiful views of the River Dranse, the slopes of Super Chatel and the imposing Dents du Midi mountain range in the distance.
If you’re staying in La Chapelle an evening at the Fer Rouge is a must! This unique bar is actually a microbrewery, serving its own beers in a fun and welcoming environment. The restaurant upstairs serves Savoyard favourites as well as more modern dishes.
